Expatriates working in Hong Kong

MPFA identifies employment-visa and overseas-retirement-scheme exemptions; expatriate status alone is not an MPF exemption. Medical territory and future relocation remain separate policy questions. Checked . We provide information and referrals to a licensed Hong Kong broker, not advice.

What usually matters

MPFA says people entering Hong Kong for employment may be exempt if their visa permits a stay of 13 months or less, or they belong to an overseas retirement scheme. Without that scheme exemption, an extension beyond 13 months ends the time-based exemption after the 13-month period. MPFA: employee and expatriate exemptions

A Hong Kong job does not establish insurance eligibility. Underwriting depends on the insurer, and IA requires accurate material disclosures. Residence and duties remain application questions, not acceptance promises. IA: disclosure and underwriting

Questions to take to the broker

Does my visa or overseas retirement membership meet an MPF exemption? Does employer medical cover continue after I leave the job? Is home-country treatment covered? What are the VHIS and international medical differences? Can I keep life or critical illness cover after moving? Which tax residences must I disclose?
