How do I make a claim from overseas?
Notify the insurer using its official claim channel, check your policy’s deadline and collect the required evidence. Confirm translation, originals and payout instructions before submission; living abroad does not prove overseas treatment is covered. Hong Kong Insurance Connect provides information and introductions; a licensed broker advises and arranges.

What should I do first while abroad?
Locate your policy, benefit type and current official claims page. Ask about notification and submission deadlines, territorial cover, eligible hospitals or doctors, pre-authorisation and the correct claimant. Do not delay necessary medical care while waiting for an insurance response. Submitting from abroad and qualifying for overseas treatment are separate questions: claim forms and online access do not extend the contract’s coverage.
For example, Prudential’s hospital guide permits overseas hospital claims with relevant documents, subject to exceptions, and asks for submission within 90 days after discharge or treatment. Do not apply that deadline to every insurer or benefit. Its disability guide uses 180 days from the start of disability. [C1, C5]
Which evidence should I collect before leaving the hospital?
Ask for itemised bills, receipts, discharge summary and relevant diagnostic reports showing the patient, diagnosis and treatment dates. Check whether the insurer requires a doctor’s section of the claim form and who pays for its completion. Keep copies and a submission inventory. Prudential lists identity copies, medical evidence and another insurer’s settlement advice where relevant. Manulife distinguishes original hospital receipts and claim forms from other documents, for which it discourages sending originals. Follow your own insurer’s instructions. [C1, C3]
For critical illness, use the condition-specific evidence checklist; for death, check beneficiary authority, death certificate and any estate or guardianship evidence. CPIC Life HK publishes separate overseas critical-illness and death requirements. Do not assume a relative can sign simply because they hold the documents. [C2]
Must documents be translated or certified?
Ask the insurer which language it accepts, what an official translation means, whether a certified copy or original is required, and who may certify it. Obtain this answer before buying translation or notarisation services. Keep the source document with its translation; check consistent names, dates and medical terminology.
CPIC Life HK requires an official Chinese or English translation where overseas medical reports or death evidence are in another language. This does not establish the same rule for every company. Ask how originals will be returned; policies differ. An enquiry email address is not automatically an accepted claim-submission channel. [C2, C3]
How should I submit and track the claim?
Use only the channel published for the relevant benefit: portal, post or an authorised intermediary where stated. Confirm portal eligibility, file limits and whether originals must follow. Keep the acknowledgement, claim number, document list and tracked-post evidence. Ask who will receive requests for further evidence across time zones. Prudential publishes eClaims for medical claims and postal submission; its disability page lists post or a financial consultant. CPIC Life HK lists intermediary, in-person or postal submission. [C1, C2, C5]
Which currency and bank account will receive settlement?
Distinguish policy currency, treatment currency and payout currency. Ask about eligible account location and holder, bank proof, exchange-rate basis, charges and cheque delivery. A premium remittance facility says nothing about claim settlement overseas. The dated table below gives limited public examples; an unknown means it must be confirmed, not that the option is unavailable. [C4, C5]
What do readers ask about overseas claims?
Does being abroad prevent me from submitting a claim?
Not automatically. Confirm the benefit’s channel and evidence; submission access does not establish coverage. [C1, C2]
Is there one claim deadline for all policies?
No. Check your contract and claim type; the cited hospital and disability examples use different periods. [C1, C5]
Can I upload scans and discard originals?
No. Confirm original-document requirements and retain records until the insurer tells you what is needed. [C1, C3]
Will every insurer accept documents in my local language?
Do not assume so. CPIC Life HK publishes official Chinese or English translation requirements for specified overseas evidence. [C2]
Can a family member sign the claim for me?
Check claimant authority and any insurer-approved authorisation; possession of records is insufficient. [C2, C3]
Will a USD policy always pay into my overseas USD account?
No such promise follows. Confirm payout currency and account eligibility; the cited medical form has specific HKD settlement rules. [C4]
Can I send reports or bank details through this site?

Where are the sources?
