How to buy Hong Kong insurance from Canada

Checked 11 Oct 2026 · General information; consult a tax adviser.

Hong Kong Insurance Connect / 港險通 provides general information and introduces enquiries to a licensed Hong Kong broker. We do not advise on, recommend or arrange policies. This guide is for residents of Canada; it does not confirm your individual eligibility.

Can I buy, and who can sell to me?

Ask the licensed broker and insurer to confirm whether they can accept your residence, nationality and tax status before you make travel plans. An insurer’s application guidance includes residence and travel history in its risk assessment; there is no acceptance promise here. Check an intermediary’s licence through the IA register linked in its consumer FAQ. [H1, H4]

For the purchase route covered by this guide, plan for the sales process to take place in Hong Kong: the needs discussion, policy explanation, application and signatures should be handled there with the licensed intermediary. Treat enquiries made before travel as requests for general information and process clarification. The IA expressly requires the entire sales process and in-person signatures in Hong Kong for Mainland visitors. Its general FAQ also describes virtual onboarding, so the Mainland-specific requirement must not be presented as a universal ban on all digital insurance sales. [H1]

Remote-purchase proposal: unconfirmed. We have not verified a final IA approval allowing the overseas purchase route discussed in the demand research. A video call is not proof of permission to buy from abroad. The IA’s 2020 sandbox circular requires location checks and specifically places Mainland visitor customers in Hong Kong before sales begin. Ask the broker for current written authority for any proposed exception; this older circular does not establish the proposal’s outcome. [H2]

Practical steps: travel, documents and medical checks

Before booking, check Hong Kong Immigration’s current requirements for your actual travel document, rather than assuming your country of residence decides entry permission. Ask the broker to confirm the in-Hong Kong process and allow for follow-up underwriting. We do not give a fixed trip length or promise same-day issue. [H3, H4]

Prepare your passport or identity document, contact details and address evidence where required. Employment or income evidence, beneficiary information and medical reports may also be requested. These are examples from an insurer’s public application guide, not an identical checklist for every insurer; request the exact list for your case. [H4]

Disclose your health history accurately. A medical examination is not compulsory for every applicant: the insurer decides from the individual circumstances. Ask whether existing reports are acceptable, whether translations are needed, and where any examination must be done before committing to travel dates. [H1, H4]

Paying premiums and receiving claims

Pay through the insurer’s official channels, directly to the insurer. Do not transfer premiums to an intermediary’s personal account. [H1]

As a practical example, Prudential Hong Kong publishes telegraphic-transfer instructions for premiums on Hong Kong-issued policies. Its stated rule is HKD for an HKD policy; for a non-HKD policy, HKD or the policy currency, subject to the relevant terms. It asks for the transfer notification and remittance advice, and places bank charges on the payer. This is one insurer’s process, not a promise that every insurer or overseas bank supports it. [H5]

If paying from Canada, ask your bank and insurer to confirm the permitted sending account, payer identity, currency, fees and receipt procedure before sending money. A Hong Kong bank account is not a universal requirement demonstrated by these sources: local autopay and a transfer from abroad are different arrangements. Approval of your particular funding route remains unverified. [H5]

For claims, confirm both the documents and the actual payout route before buying. Prudential’s death claim form lists identity and relationship evidence, the death certificate and other supporting documents; its settlement section includes HKD or policy-currency cheques, with local or overseas USD cheque choices. This does not establish automatic bank transfer to Canada. Ask the insurer and receiving bank about collection, clearance, currency conversion and any alternative payout method. These examples apply to that form only. [H6]

Home-country tax and reporting

CRA’s T1135 FAQ explicitly says a life policy issued by a foreign issuer is specified foreign property. Canadian resident taxpayers generally file T1135 if the total cost amount of specified foreign property exceeds CAD 100,000 at any time in the year, subject to the applicable exceptions. CRA accepts adjusted cost basis as a reasonable approximation of a foreign policy’s cost amount. Being below the reporting threshold does not exempt taxable foreign income. [T1]

The exempt-policy test is a separate issue. CRA’s archived IT-87R2 describes an exemption-test policy and annual accrual taxation with exceptions including exempt policies. The page is archived and not updated: it is historical context, not confirmation of the current test or of a Hong Kong contract’s exemption. Current policy-specific testing and accrual calculations remain unverified. Obtain insurer data and consult a Canadian tax adviser; do not assume T1135 reporting establishes the income-tax treatment. [T1, T2]

Local rules on offshore insurance

Ontario FSRA publishes the companies licensed in Ontario and says its list is not a rating or recommendation. Use this as an Ontario check, not proof of permission across Canada. Ask the broker to establish the applicable permissions in your province or territory and explain where advice and sales will occur. The specific offshore-purchase exemptions and protections are unverified. [R1]

Currency, residency changes and moving

Check the policy currency against the currency in which you earn and spend, and ask for both guaranteed and non-guaranteed benefits and early-surrender values. The IA identifies exchange-rate risk and surrender or withdrawal charges as matters to examine. Do not treat an illustration as a promised return. [H1]

Before moving, ask the insurer in writing whether cover, premiums, payment channels, claims handling or servicing will change at the new address. Do not assume either automatic cancellation or unchanged cover: this draft has not verified the terms of an individual policy. Prudential publishes forms for changing contact details, personal particulars and payment arrangements. Update the insurer and review your tax residence with a tax adviser. Hong Kong IRD describes tax-residence self-certification and possible onward reporting of account information; it does not determine your home-country tax bill. [H7, H8]

Frequently asked questions

Can I finish the purchase while staying overseas?

The overseas remote-purchase proposal is unconfirmed. Use the Hong Kong process described above unless the licensed broker supplies current written authority for a different route. Mainland visitor sales must be completed in Hong Kong. [H1, H2]

How do I check that the person is licensed?

Use the IA intermediary register linked in the IA FAQ, and check the person and the broker firm. A social-media profile is not the licence check. [H1]

What documents should I take, and must I open a Hong Kong account?

Request your insurer’s document list; identity, address and financial evidence are common examples. The payment source describes local autopay and telegraphic transfers; it does not establish a universal requirement to open a Hong Kong account. [H4, H5]

Will a past illness stop me buying, or do I need a medical check?

Give accurate medical information to the insurer. Examinations and underwriting are case-specific; this page cannot predict acceptance or terms. [H1, H4]

Can I keep paying after returning home, and receive claims there?

Confirm the renewal payment channel and claims settlement method separately. The transfer instructions and cheque choices cited above do not guarantee acceptance by your sending or receiving bank. [H5, H6]

Can I cancel if I change my mind?

The IA identifies cancellation during the cooling-off period as a policyholder right. Ask the insurer for the applicable start date, deadline and cancellation procedure; this draft does not verify a specific period or refund amount for your policy. Early surrender is a separate question. [H1]

Does an exempt policy avoid T1135?

Do not equate the two tests. CRA identifies foreign-issued life policies as specified foreign property; ask your adviser about reporting thresholds and exceptions separately from the exempt-policy test. [T1, T2]

Next step

Contact Hong Kong Insurance Connect / 港險通 with a general enquiry about the process. With your consent, we pass enquiries to a licensed Hong Kong broker for any regulated advice and policy arrangements. When you contact us, the licensed broker who handles your enquiry will first tell you its company name and Insurance Authority licence number. You can check it on the IA register before you continue. The broker’s identity is not published on this site. We do not collect premiums or arrange travel.

Unverified points
