Hong Kong insurance for residents of India

Checked 12 Oct 2026 · General information; consult a tax adviser.

Hong Kong Insurance Connect / 港險通 provides information and broker referrals, not policy advice or arrangements. For an India resident, Hong Kong insurer acceptance is only part of the question: FEMA permission and a lawful funding route must also be established. LRS headroom does not by itself authorize a foreign life policy.

Can I buy, and who can sell to me?

Start with the insurance category. RBI’s Insurance Master Direction distinguishes overseas health cover from life insurance: the latter must be held under specific or general RBI permission. Ask your authorised dealer bank to identify the permission for the proposed contract before applying. A Hong Kong broker’s willingness to accept an enquiry does not settle this Indian requirement. [R1]

For a permitted transaction, request residence and nationality acceptance from the insurer and use a licensed Hong Kong intermediary. Check both the individual and firm through the IA register. This guide’s sales route takes place in Hong Kong, including needs analysis, explanation, application and signing. Permission to complete your purchase from India is unconfirmed; the IA FAQ’s discussion of virtual onboarding is not Indian authorization. The FAQ’s mandatory Hong Kong location rule is specifically addressed to Mainland visitors. [H1]

Practical steps: travel, documents and medical checks

Have the bank review the actual contract and funding source first. Ask the broker what identity, address, income, beneficiary and tax-residence evidence the insurer needs, then check entry requirements for your travel document. Do not book around a promised same-day issue: acceptance, document requirements and trip length are unverified.

Arrange any needs discussion and signatures in Hong Kong only after the legal route is established. Ask whether Indian medical records need translation and whether an examination is required. IA explains that examinations depend on the applicant; accurate health disclosure remains necessary even without an examination. [H1]

Paying premiums and receiving claims

The RBI LRS direction permits resident individuals to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year, April to March, for permitted transactions. It is an aggregate ceiling, not a separate allowance for every policy or bank. Ask the bank to reconcile other LRS use, purpose classification, declarations and applicable tax collection before payment. This page does not verify a current TCS rate or an exception above that ceiling for an insurance purchase. [F1]

For overseas health insurance, RBI expressly places aggregate remittances including premiums within LRS limits. For life insurance, the separate permission requirement still matters. Its published continuation rule allows a resident to retain a life policy acquired while non-resident; where premiums have been remitted from India, maturity or claim proceeds must be repatriated through normal banking channels within 7 days of receipt. Have the bank confirm how the rule applies to your history and transaction. [R1]

Once payment is permitted, obtain the insurer’s official instructions and pay the insurer directly. Ask separately how a beneficiary will submit a claim and receive funds in India; a premium remittance arrangement does not prove that the receiving bank will accept every payout. [H1]

Home-country tax and reporting

The Income Tax Department’s foreign-asset guide includes foreign cash-value insurance and annuity contracts in Schedule FA, table A4. It also explains foreign-income reporting through Schedule FSI. The document concerns an earlier assessment year, so ask a tax adviser to check your current return, residence category and reporting period. Do not assume that keeping policy value abroad removes a disclosure obligation. [T1]

Consult a tax adviser about the actual contract’s premiums, withdrawals, surrender, maturity and death benefits, and any relief or tax collection on remittance. Individual exemptions, tax rates and reporting treatment for this Hong Kong policy remain unverified. CRS self-certification is distinct from calculating or paying Indian tax. [H2]

Local rules on offshore insurance

RBI says insurance business in India is undertaken by insurers registered with the Indian insurance regulator. Its foreign-policy rules use FEMA residence, so a passport or an overseas bank account does not answer every permission question. Ask the bank and a qualified local adviser to distinguish a new purchase, renewal and continuation of a policy bought before returning to India. Do not use travel or a payment intermediary as a way around a restriction. Local solicitation permission for the proposed Hong Kong seller is unverified. [R1]

Currency, residency changes and moving

Budget in the currency of the contractual premiums as well as the rupees needed to fund them. Ask for guaranteed values, non-guaranteed illustrations, withdrawal charges and early-surrender values before agreeing to a long commitment. Currency diversification does not remove exchange-rate risk. [H1]

If returning to India or leaving it, record when residence changes and when the policy was acquired. Revisit the RBI continuation and repatriation rules with the bank, and update the insurer’s address and tax self-certification. Ask whether servicing and cover can continue at the destination; this page confirms neither unchanged cover nor automatic cancellation. [R1, H2]

Frequently asked questions

Does unused LRS allowance let me buy any Hong Kong life policy?

No such blanket permission is established. The USD 250,000 ceiling covers permitted remittances; overseas life insurance has its own specific or general RBI permission requirement. [F1, R1]

Is overseas health insurance treated the same as life insurance?

RBI distinguishes them. Overseas health premiums fall within aggregate LRS remittances; the life-policy permission rule must be checked separately. [R1]

Can I keep a policy bought while I lived outside India?

RBI publishes a continuation rule. Review the premium history and its 7 days repatriation requirement with your bank before relying on that route. [R1]

Can the purchase be completed by video from India?

That route is unconfirmed here. Plan any authorized sale in Hong Kong with a licensed intermediary; Hong Kong virtual onboarding guidance does not establish FEMA or Indian solicitation permission. [H1, R1]

Must I declare a foreign cash-value policy?

Schedule FA table A4 covers that category in the tax authority’s guide. A tax adviser must confirm your current filing duties and residence category. [T1]

Will I need a medical examination?

The insurer decides from the application. Ask about examinations and translated reports; disclose relevant health history accurately whether or not a test is requested. [H1]

What if I cancel or surrender the policy?

Ask for the cooling-off procedure and surrender values before signing, and have the bank and tax adviser check returning funds. Cancellation rights do not establish an Indian tax exemption. [H1, R1]

Next step

Send Hong Kong Insurance Connect / 港險通 a general enquiry about residence, the policy category and process questions. With consent, enquiries can be referred to a licensed Hong Kong broker for regulated advice and arrangements. The broker will disclose its company name and IA licence number when handling the enquiry, so you can check the register before continuing. We do not collect premiums or arrange travel.

Unverified points

Your specific RBI permission, bank approval, insurer acceptance, current tax return treatment, TCS, travel and medical requirements, offshore solicitation permissions and future policy servicing remain unverified. Remote purchase from India is unconfirmed. A general enquiry is not clearance to pay or buy.
