Hong Kong vs mainland critical illness: what differs?

Hong Kong and mainland critical illness policies use different frameworks; condition counts do not show which pays more readily. Hong Kong's voluntary 2026 framework covers 16 major and 5 minor definitions; the mainland 2020 standard covers 28 severe and 3 mild definitions. Which definitions apply in Hong Kong and mainland China?

HKFI’s voluntary standardisation starts with new individual products from 2026-09-01. Its scope is 16 major and 5 minor conditions, with activities of daily living separately defined. It does not automatically amend existing policies or require every plan to cover every condition. Verify adoption in the policy version, not just the purchase date. [C1, C2]

The mainland 2020 revision was issued by the Insurance Association of China and Chinese Medical Doctor Association under CBIRC guidance. NFRA now provides regulatory material, but calling the standard a new NFRA rule would misstate its origin. It contains 28 severe and 3 mild definitions. Contracts signed from 2021-02-01 whose insurance period is mainly adulthood must comply; earlier effective contracts retain their contractual terms. [C3, C4]

For in-scope products named critical illness insurance, the mainland standard requires the core 6 severe conditions. If the product also covers lower-benefit illnesses, it must include the specified 3 mild conditions. For the mild conditions in this standard, the cumulative insured amount is capped at 30% of the corresponding severe condition, with an additional rule for multiple claims. These are framework rules, not every plan’s full coverage list. [C3]

What should I compare instead of counting illnesses?

Place the actual clauses side by side: severity, required treatment or surgery, lasting impairment, exclusions, waiting period, survival period and benefit amount. A diagnosis with a similar name can fall short of contractual criteria. The numerical scopes above are not comparable product scores. Ask the licensed broker to identify the wording and the insurer to clarify medical-evidence requirements. [C1, C3, C5]

Do Hong Kong policies always allow more claims?

No jurisdiction guarantees multiple claims. Read whether the plan ends after a payment, whether later claims must be in another disease group, the interval between claims, recurrence rules, age limits and any reduction of other benefits. HKFI’s standardisation recognises that later claims may have different criteria; the mainland standard also expressly addresses multiple-claim designs. Compare a specific contract with a specific contract. [C1, C3, C5]

Does policy currency change the protection?

Record the contractual currency for premiums and benefits, then compare it with the currency of your income and future expenses. Foreign-currency premiums and claim proceeds can gain or lose value when converted to renminbi. Do not assume every Hong Kong policy is in US dollars or that currency diversification removes exchange risk. Mainland visitors should read the currency and payment warnings in the important facts statement and pay through lawful channels directly to the insurer. [C6]

Where must mainland visitors sign the Hong Kong policy?

The insurance sales process for mainland visitors must take place in Hong Kong, including signing the application and required declarations. Signing only the last page in Hong Kong does not cure sales activity conducted in the mainland. A website enquiry is general information and referral, not remote policy arrangement. Check identity, entry evidence and the insurer’s process with a licensed Hong Kong broker before travelling. [C6, C7]

Can I claim while living abroad?

Submitting a claim from abroad and qualifying on an overseas diagnosis are separate matters. For example, Bowtie’s Children’s Growth Term Critical Illness FAQ allows online claims from anywhere but says diagnosis must be in Hong Kong by a registered doctor with relevant specialist qualifications. This is a product-specific example, not a rule for all Hong Kong insurers. [C8]

Ask the actual insurer which hospitals and specialists it recognises, whether foreign reports need translation or certification, what originals and time limits apply, and how benefits can be paid to your account. Keep medical reports and test results. Neither being abroad nor having an online claim facility guarantees approval. [C5, C8]

Where can I read more and request clarification?

Read the HKFI definition guide, critical illness basics and term versus whole life. Consult the Mainland country guide or your country guide, and check our trust page. The fulfillment ratios hub measures historical non-guaranteed policy benefits, not critical illness claim success. Send a general enquiry with residence and policy version; we can refer you to a licensed broker for advice and arrangement.

What do cross-border critical illness readers ask?

Is Hong Kong cover easier to claim because it lists more illnesses?

The list length does not answer that. Definitions, evidence, exclusions and benefits determine the contractual claim test. [C1, C3, C5]

Did NFRA introduce the mainland definitions in 2020?

The associations issued the revision under CBIRC guidance. NFRA is the current regulator, not the original issuer of that association standard. [C3, C4]

Will my old policy get the new definitions automatically?

Neither framework automatically replaces an earlier contract’s wording. Check the version applicable to your policy. [C1, C3]

Can I get paid again if the illness comes back?

Only if your policy’s later-claim provisions cover that event and all relevant conditions are met. Check recurrence and intervals; do not assume a country-wide entitlement. [C1, C3]

Can I sign online from the mainland?

For the mainland-visitor sales route described here, the sales process and signing must take place in Hong Kong. This site does not arrange a remote purchase. [C6, C7]

If I submit online overseas, will an overseas diagnosis qualify?

Not necessarily. Some products require diagnosis in Hong Kong despite allowing online submission from abroad. Obtain the actual insurer’s requirements. [C8]

Will a dollar claim always be worth more in renminbi?

No. Conversion depends on exchange rates and charges; a foreign-currency policy creates currency risk. [C6]
