How can I pay premiums safely?

Verify the payment request through the insurer’s official website or portal and independently obtained contact details. Match the payee, channel, currency and policy reference before paying. Hong Kong Insurance Connect provides information and introductions; a licensed Hong Kong broker advises and arranges. We do not collect premiums.

Checked on 12 Oct 2026 · Anti-scam checklist; current insurer instructions control each payment.

How do I verify the person and the request?

Check the intermediary’s current status in the IA register, then independently contact the insurer to confirm the request. A genuine licence does not authenticate a message sent in that person’s name. IA recommends official methods for payment directly to the insurer and warns against cash or transfers to an intermediary’s personal account. [P1]

Start from the insurer’s website you independently locate or its installed official app. Do not treat a forwarded QR code, screenshot, search advertisement or chat contact as proof. Use the insurer’s published customer-service contact to ask whether the demand relates to your initial premium, renewal, levy or another policy transaction. HKMA advises verifying suspicious messages through official channels; banks do not send transactional SMS or email links directing customers to their websites or apps. That banking rule does not authenticate an insurer message. [P2]

What should I match before authorising payment?

Use this checklist against the live insurer instruction, rather than copying details from this guide:

Prudential publishes currency-specific remittance accounts and requests checking the account currency, number and amount before sending. Its cheque instructions require policyholder and policy/billing references. AIA publishes payment channels and cheque payee instructions; online renewal payment has its own payer and policy restrictions. These are examples, not permission to use the same method for every policy. No account numbers are reproduced here: reopen the official instructions and confirm any discrepancy with the insurer. [P4, P5, P6]

What if someone changes the recipient or pressures me?

Pause a request to use a personal account, a new recipient or an unfamiliar payment link, even if it claims a deadline or says an earlier account is unavailable. Contact the insurer using details obtained independently of that request. Ask it to confirm the complete instruction, not only the recipient’s display name. Do not share bank passwords or one-time passwords with the sender. Check transaction details before entering a bank OTP. [P1, P2]

Use the police Scameter service through official channels as an additional risk check. An absence of a warning is not proof of legitimacy. If money has already been sent to a suspected scammer, contact your bank immediately and report the matter to police; ask the bank whether interception is still possible. The police ADCC provides round-the-clock consultation through Anti-Scam Helpline 18222. Recovery is not assured. [P2, P3]

How do I confirm that the premium reached my policy?

Retain the payment instruction, transaction proof, date, currency, amount and reference. Check the insurer’s portal or obtain its confirmation that payment was allocated to the intended policy. A bank debit or a chat screenshot alone does not establish allocation. Ask about processing time before paying again; unresolved status is a reason to investigate, not evidence that a second transfer is needed. IA encourages regular portal checks to identify irregularities. [P1, P4]

What do readers ask about safe premium payments?

Can I transfer to an intermediary’s personal account?

IA warns against doing so. Pay the insurer by an official permitted method. [P1]

Does a valid licence prove a payment message is genuine?

No. Verify the sender and instruction independently with the insurer; someone can impersonate a licensee.

Is a QR code enough to verify the recipient?

No. Compare it with the insurer’s current official instruction and verify the transaction details before approving.

Can every family member pay for me?

Do not assume so. Payer eligibility and declarations differ by insurer and channel. [P4, P6]

Does no Scameter warning mean a payment is safe?

No. Continue independent checks of the recipient and request. [P2]

What if my bank was debited but the policy is not updated?

Keep proof and ask the insurer to trace the payment before making another transfer. [P4]

What if I suspect a scam after sending money?

Contact your bank promptly and report to police. Anti-Scam Helpline 18222 provides consultation, not a recovery promise. [P2, P3]
