What is critical illness insurance?
Critical illness insurance generally pays a lump sum when a covered illness meets the policy's definition and claim conditions. It differs from reimbursement of medical bills, and a diagnosis alone may not qualify. Hong Kong Insurance Connect explains the cover and refers enquiries to licensed brokers, without recommending plans or guaranteeing claims.

What does critical illness insurance pay for?
The cash benefit can generally be used for treatment, daily spending or other financial needs without tying it to the amount of a hospital bill. Common covered categories include cancer, stroke, heart disease and serious organ illness, but each policy specifies its own conditions, severity and benefits. A disease name in an advertisement is not the full definition. [I1, I2]
How is it different from medical and life insurance?
Medical insurance generally reimburses eligible medical expenses subject to its limits. Critical illness insurance pays on a qualifying illness under the contract; death cover pays on death. These triggers are different. Read term versus whole life insurance for life-cover basics and VHIS explained for certified hospital cover. One type does not automatically include the others. [I1, I3]
Does every serious diagnosis qualify?
No. Read severity, treatment, surgery or lasting-impairment criteria, exclusions, waiting periods and any survival period after diagnosis. Some early-stage benefits pay a smaller amount and may reduce later benefits. Disclose health information accurately when applying and retain diagnostic evidence for a claim. Claims interpretation belongs with the insurer and relevant clinicians. [I1]
Can it pay several times or last for life?
Policies can provide term or whole-life critical illness cover and can be standalone or attached to life insurance. Single-claim and multiple-claim designs differ. Check whether a payment ends cover, reduces death benefits, or leaves later protection subject to intervals, recurrence rules or disease groups. “Whole life” does not itself promise unlimited claims. [I1]
Where can I check Hong Kong and cross-border rules?
Read Hong Kong versus mainland critical illness and the HKFI definition guide. Use your country guide and the Mainland guide for signing and servicing questions. Check the trust page before an introduction. The fulfillment ratios hub concerns historical participating benefits, not illness claims approval. Send a general enquiry with residence and the policy clause you want clarified; licensed Hong Kong brokers provide advice and arrangement.
What do readers ask about critical illness insurance?
Does it reimburse whatever my hospital charges?
Normally it pays a contractual lump sum on a qualifying illness, rather than reimbursing the bill amount. [I1]
Can I use the money for living costs?
Generally the benefit has no restriction on use, so it can support daily spending as well as treatment. [I1, I2]
Does a cancer diagnosis always mean a full payment?
No. Check the exact definition, stage, exclusions and benefit amount; early-stage and major benefits can differ. [I1]
Is it already included in my life policy?
Not automatically. Check for a standalone policy, rider or express critical illness benefit. [I1, I3]
If I survive the illness, can I still receive the benefit?
Yes, subject to the claim terms; some policies require survival for a specified period after diagnosis. [I1]
Does paying one claim end the policy?
It depends on the design. Read termination, later-claim and benefit-reduction clauses. [I1]
Is the number of illnesses enough to compare plans?
No. Compare definitions, severity, exclusions, claim conditions and benefits, not just the count. [I1]
