What happens on your signing day in Hong Kong?

A signing visit typically covers identity checks, needs assessment, explanations, disclosures and application signatures; medical tests and underwriting may follow. Signing does not itself confirm cover. Hong Kong Insurance Connect provides general information and introductions; the licensed broker who handles your enquiry advises and arranges.

Checked on 12 Oct 2026 · Generic preparation guide; appointments and services must be confirmed individually.

What should I confirm when booking the appointment?

Ask the licensed broker who handles your enquiry for a written appointment confirmation: date, time, office address and district, access instructions, who must attend, documents and any separately booked medical visit. There is no single signing district or standard office for all applicants. Confirm the broker’s current licence and scope of service using the IA register before sharing sensitive documents. [S1]

Choose a language you understand and ask whether the discussion, forms and policy are available in English, Cantonese or Mandarin, or whether an interpreter for another language can be arranged. These are requests to confirm, not promises of available languages. Ask who provides and pays for interpretation, and how you can review documents in advance. Do not sign explanations you cannot understand.

How long should I allow for the office visit?

Ask for an estimate based on the number of applicants, product complexity, document review, interpretation and medical appointments. No public source reviewed establishes a universal duration, so this guide promises no fixed number of hours. Leave time to ask questions and correct errors, and ask whether a further visit may be needed. Avoid planning a departure that depends on same-day completion or approval.

What typically happens during the meeting?

The following is a planning sequence; the exact order and forms vary. Public insurer application guidance describes assessment of needs, understanding terms, application documents and underwriting. [S2]

  1. Confirm the people present and show the identity and supporting documents requested by the insurer.
  2. Discuss objectives, existing cover, financial commitments and the affordability of future premiums.
  3. Review the proposal, benefit illustration and policy terms: guaranteed and non-guaranteed benefits, exclusions, surrender losses, currency risks and ongoing obligations.
  4. Answer health, occupation, financial and tax-residence questions accurately; correct any pre-filled errors.
  5. Read and sign the applicable application and declarations only after the licensed broker explains them.
  6. Confirm the insurer’s payment instructions, follow-up documents and how to track underwriting and delivery.

For Mainland visitors, the sales process and signatures must take place in Hong Kong. Keep the travel and sales-process records and review the Important Facts Statement for Mainland Policyholder where applicable. Our referral does not replace those requirements. [S1]

Will I need a medical examination or another visit?

Not everyone needs an exam. Underwriting may request tests or medical reports based on the individual case. Ask the licensed broker who handles your enquiry to confirm whether a separate medical appointment is required, the insurer’s accepted clinic, required preparation, fees and how results are submitted. Do not assume a test must happen at the signing office or on the same day. Follow the clinic’s preparation instructions. [S1, S2]

What happens after I sign and pay?

Submission proceeds to underwriting; the insurer may ask for further evidence or offer different terms. Obtain the actual commencement date and any interim-cover terms in writing. A signature, payment receipt or medical booking alone is not confirmation that the final policy is in force. [S2]

Confirm whether the policy arrives electronically, by post or through an agreed delivery arrangement, and who receives it. IA digital-onboarding guidance describes electronic or posted policies, not a universal same-day delivery promise. Check the issued schedule, insured, owner, beneficiaries, exclusions and premium terms against what was agreed, and report discrepancies promptly. [S3]

When does the cooling-off period start?

For life policies to which the IA cooling-off rules apply, the period is 21 calendar days immediately following delivery of the policy or cooling-off notice to you or your nominated representative, whichever is earlier. It is not simply counted from signing day. Note the actual deadline and the insurer’s direct written-cancellation procedure; allow time for the insurer to receive the request. [S4, S5]

Do not assume every insurance class has the same right. Refunds may be subject to a market value adjustment where applicable; check the contract and disclosed terms. Leaving Hong Kong does not reset the clock. Ask for the cancellation instructions before departure rather than waiting for a return visit. [S5, S6]

Where can I prepare further and enquire?

Use the document checklist and payment guide, or the grandparent guide for family roles. Read the life-stage hub and parents page, your country guide and the Mainland guide. Use trust checks and fulfillment-ratio context before relying on sales statements. Ask about the signing process with residence, preferred language and questions. This website introduces enquiries; an appointment must be confirmed with the licensed broker who handles your enquiry.

What do readers ask about signing day?

Is there one office or district everyone visits?

No universal venue is specified. Obtain the address, access instructions and attendee requirements in writing.

Can you promise the visit will finish within a few hours?

No. Ask for a case-specific estimate and allow for document corrections, interpretation or further appointments.

Will English, Cantonese and Mandarin always be available?

Do not assume so. Confirm the spoken language, document language and any interpretation arrangements before travel.

Does everyone have a medical exam on signing day?

No. Whether and when an exam is needed depends on underwriting and clinic arrangements. [S1, S2]

Does signing mean the policy is already in force?

No. Confirm underwriting acceptance, commencement date and any interim-cover conditions with the insurer. [S2]

Is the cooling-off deadline counted from the meeting?

No. The relevant delivery or notice trigger starts the 21-calendar-day period, whichever is earlier. [S4, S5]

Can I receive a policy after leaving Hong Kong?

Confirm the permitted delivery route and recipient first; leaving Hong Kong does not postpone the review deadline. [S3, S5]
