Diabetes: what does underwriting ask?

For diabetes, prepare accurate application answers and case-specific evidence. Acceptance, exclusions, loading or postponement depend on the insurer and policy. Hong Kong Insurance Connect provides information and referrals; a licensed Hong Kong broker advises and arranges. This is not medical advice.

What health questions and records should I prepare?

FWD’s public vChoice questionnaire asks whether diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance has ever been diagnosed. It also separately asks about kidney disease and ongoing follow-up or prescribed medication. Do not replace the actual diagnosis with a general statement that you feel well. Gather the diagnosis date, medication list and existing blood or urine results; ask whether a doctor’s statement or further testing is needed. No glucose or glycated haemoglobin acceptance threshold is asserted. [H2, H3]

The application normally starts with health questions; clarification, a supplementary questionnaire, existing reports or a doctor’s statement may follow. Examinations are individual, not compulsory for everyone. Ask for the actual form, its disclosure periods and a written list of outstanding evidence. Do not arrange new tests solely from this guide. [H1, H3]

How do VHIS, critical illness and life applications differ?

VHIS concerns hospital-expense cover. Certified-plan health disclosure uses the standardised underwriting questionnaire: read the exact scope and timeframe, including ongoing follow-up. Under the VHIS FAQs, an omitted standardised question represents a waiver of that health information for underwriting. This is a specific rule, not permission to conceal an answer that is asked. Known conditions are different from unknown pre-existing conditions; the latter’s staged cover does not promise cover for a disclosed condition. [H4]

Critical illness pays under the covered illness definitions and benefit conditions, rather than reimbursing every treatment bill; life insurance focuses on the contractual death benefit. Their health questions and evidence requests need separate review. Do not assume VHIS disclosure limits or one product’s decision apply to a life or critical-illness application. Ask about the actual benefit, waiting period and exclusions. [H1, H3, H5, H7]

Which decisions remain individual?

The insurer can accept an application, offer exclusions or premium loading, postpone assessment or decline it. These are possible decisions, not forecasts for this condition. VHIS does not guarantee acceptance; its FAQs allow exclusions or loading for pre-existing conditions and other risks, including smoking. Obtain the written terms for each benefit: acceptance of a life benefit does not establish acceptance of a medical or critical-illness rider. Ask what an exclusion covers, what any extra premium applies to and what is missing if assessment is postponed. [H3, H4]

What should I ask the licensed broker before applying?

Prepare your residence, intended cover, existing policies and a dated health or smoking timeline. Keep existing reports with their dates, medication and follow-up details available for a secure channel. Ask whether overseas reports need translation, which report edition and recency are acceptable, whether a supplementary questionnaire is required, and who requests, books and pays for any examination. These are confirmation questions, not universal requirements. Request written explanations of the insurer’s decision; no acceptance probability or loading estimate is supplied here. [H1, H3]

What happens if I do not disclose accurately?

Answer the applicable questions completely and honestly, checking dates against records. IA warns that non-disclosure or misrepresentation of material facts can lead to rejected claims or an invalid policy; an examination does not replace disclosure. For VHIS, apply the standardised questionnaire’s scope and periods rather than an unlimited-history assumption. If a question, old diagnosis or ongoing follow-up is unclear, ask the insurer or licensed broker for clarification before signing, and keep the answer and corrections. [H1, H4]

What do readers ask about this application?

Can I omit diabetes if I take no medication?

No. The diagnosis question and medication question are separate. Answer the actual questionnaire accurately. [H2]

Do I always need a medical examination?

No. IA says the request depends on individual circumstances; disclosure remains necessary without an examination. [H1]

Can an existing report replace a new test?

Ask the insurer about its required evidence, accepted provider and report date. Do not assume acceptance or order a new test without instructions. [H3]

Does VHIS cover my disclosed condition automatically?

No. Known conditions are subject to underwriting; unknown pre-existing condition provisions do not guarantee cover for a known condition. [H4]

Does a medical exclusion also apply to life cover?

Read each benefit’s written terms. Do not transfer a decision between separate benefits or applications. [H3, H7]

Can I predict a loading from a diagnosis or smoking label?

No. This page contains no individual acceptance forecast, loading percentage or medical threshold. Obtain the insurer’s written decision. [H4]

Should I send my reports through the contact form?

No. Use the form for a general process question. Confirm a secure document channel with the insurer or licensed broker.
