What is QDAP and how does the tax deduction work?
QDAP is an IA-certified deferred annuity. Eligible qualifying premiums and tax-deductible MPF voluntary contributions share a HK$60,000 deduction cap per taxpayer per assessment year; this is an income deduction, not cash returned. Hong Kong Insurance Connect explains the rules and refers to licensed brokers, without recommending annuities or providing tax advice.

What does a qualifying deferred annuity do?
A deferred annuity has an accumulation phase, when premiums are paid, followed by an annuity phase with regular income. QDAP certification concerns IA criteria, not a promise that the product meets an individual’s needs. The minimum premium-payment period is 5 years; annuity payments start at age 50 or later and run for at least 10 years. Actual dates, guaranteed income and non-guaranteed benefits depend on the contract. Early surrender can cause loss, and foreign-currency premiums and income carry exchange risk. [A1, A2]
How much can I deduct and how does TVC affect it?
Qualifying annuity premiums and tax-deductible MPF voluntary contributions (TVC) share a HK$60,000 annual cap under salaries tax or personal assessment. Multiple QDAP policies do not multiply that cap. IRD allows TVC first, then qualifying annuity premiums within the remaining limit. For example, HK$40,000 TVC and HK$50,000 qualifying annuity premiums allow HK$40,000 TVC plus HK$20,000 annuity deduction: HK$60,000 total. [A3]
Deductible premiums must actually be paid in the assessment year, net of refunds. An invoice or due date alone is not enough. The amount reduces assessable income; actual tax savings depend on your assessment and are not HK$60,000. Keep payment receipts and the insurer’s qualifying-premium statement. [A3]
Who can benefit and can spouses share the deduction?
The policyholder must be the taxpayer or spouse; the annuitant must be the taxpayer or spouse and hold a Hong Kong identity card at some time in the assessment year. A married couple not living apart can allocate qualifying annuity-premium deductions, subject to each person’s cap, TVC and actual qualifying premiums paid. They cannot deduct the same payment twice. If one spouse has no chargeable income, do not assume their unused cap transfers to the other spouse. [A3, A4]
Having no Hong Kong tax liability may mean no immediate Hong Kong tax saving. An overseas or mainland residence does not itself establish a deduction; nor does Hong Kong certification establish home-country tax relief. Ask a qualified tax adviser about your assessment, and a licensed broker about insurance needs and affordability. [A3, A4]
How do I check the IA certified list?
Open the IA’s List of QDAP, find the exact insurer and product name, and match the certified product to the quotation and policy version. Ask the insurer to confirm that the premium statement identifies qualifying premiums. A general “retirement” or “annuity” label is not enough to establish QDAP status. [A1, A5]
Our official-list collection dated 2026-10-11 could not retrieve the IA list; direct retrieval at this review was also unavailable. We therefore publish no current certified-product count or inferred list. Check the official page manually and obtain confirmation of the specific product rather than treating missing data as no certified products. [A5]
What should I compare before locking away premiums?
Check payment affordability throughout the premium term, when income starts, income duration, guaranteed and non-guaranteed portions, surrender values, death benefits, fees and currency. Consider what happens if you need cash before annuity commencement. A tax deduction does not compensate automatically for surrender losses or make a product appropriate. [A1, A2]
Where can I read related guidance and enquire?
Compare the separate VHIS deduction rules and learn about participating policies. Check the fulfillment ratios hub for participating-benefit history, not future annuity promises. Read your country guide and the Mainland guide, then our trust page. Send a general enquiry with the certified product name and the question you need clarified. We provide information and introductions; a licensed Hong Kong broker advises and arranges.
What do readers ask about QDAP tax relief?
Is any deferred annuity tax deductible?
No. Verify QDAP certification and your personal eligibility; a product label alone is insufficient. [A1, A5]
Do I get HK$60,000 back from the tax office?
No. It is the shared maximum income deduction, and actual tax savings depend on your assessment. [A3]
Does buying several policies increase my cap?
No. All qualifying annuity premiums and TVC remain within the same individual limit. [A3]
I already pay TVC. Is there still a QDAP deduction?
Only within the remaining shared cap after deductible TVC is allowed. [A3]
Can I use my spouse’s unused limit if they have no taxable income?
Do not assume this. IRD’s example keeps the earning spouse within their individual cap when the other has no chargeable income. [A3]
Does a mainland passport rule out the deduction?
Passport alone does not decide it. Check taxpayer, policyholder, annuitant and Hong Kong identity-card conditions, as well as the relevant assessment. [A3, A4]
Can I deduct premiums that were refunded after cancellation?
The deductible amount is net of refunds. If relief has already been claimed, check IRD’s notification requirements. [A3]
