Employers of domestic helpers

Hong Kong employers must insure employees’ compensation liabilities for full-time and part-time domestic helpers. Labour Department confirms this duty. This is general insurance; helper cover is outside this site’s broker referral. Checked . Information only, not advice.

What usually matters

Labour Department says compulsory insurance covers employers’ liabilities for work injury or death under the Ordinance and at common law, including full-time and part-time helpers. The employer pays the full premium without deductions from the helper’s earnings. Labour Department: compulsory helper compensation insurance

Employees’ compensation is general insurance. IA distinguishes employees’ compensation obligations from broader helper medical cover and identifies the employer in the employment contract as policyholder. Personal term-life and medical links below concern the employer’s own cover, not compulsory helper insurance. The enquiry link is for personal cover questions only; no helper-cover referral is offered. IA: domestic helper insuranceIA: employees’ compensation general insurance business

Questions to take to the broker

Does the policy expressly cover statutory and common-law employees’ compensation liabilities? Is the named employer correct? Does it cover my local or part-time helper? Which medical benefits and waiting periods apply? How is a change of helper recorded? Where are the policy documents?
