How does Hong Kong insurance work?

Hong Kong Insurance Connect: A policy sets out benefits, exclusions and duties. Cooling-off rights have a delivery trigger; loans and changes to currency, policy structure or insured person depend on the contract. This referrer links the detailed guides below; it gives no insurance advice. Checked on .

How do policy benefits and illustrations fit together?

Use the term and whole-life guide for protection structures and the participating-policy guide for bonuses, guarantees, IRR and break-even. A participating policy can include non-guaranteed bonuses; the illustration is not a promise of those amounts. The IA describes the different life-insurance structures and their risks. [W1]

Distinguish guaranteed values, illustrated non-guaranteed values and the amount available on surrender at the date you need it. Our glossary defines the terms and links the fuller explanations. The surrender calculator explores supplied cashflows; it does not predict bonuses or choose a policy.

When does the cooling-off clock start?

The IA glossary describes 21 calendar days immediately following delivery of the life policy or cooling-off notice to the policyholder or nominated representative, whichever is earlier. A refund can be subject to a market value adjustment where applicable. Do not apply this life-policy description to every insurance class. [W2]

Record the actual delivery or notice date, the deadline and the insurer’s cancellation route. The signing-day guide explains why the meeting date is not the trigger. Ask the insurer how a written cancellation must reach it in time; this page does not recommend cancellation.

Is a policy loan the same as taking out savings?

No. Prudential’s public service page distinguishes requested borrowing from an automatic premium loan, and warns that accumulated loan obligations can cause termination under its conditions. Confirm current eligibility, interest, repayment and effects on payable benefits rather than treating the loan as a free withdrawal. [W3]

Use policy-change procedures and withdrawal effects. A bank loan secured on a policy is a separate financing arrangement; the financing-risk guide covers that distinction.

What do currency switch and policy split actually mean?

A currency switch concerns the contract currency, not simply sending a premium in another currency. A split concerns dividing the policy structure rather than receiving claim money. Prudential’s Hong Kong Entrust page publishes a Currency Change Option and Wealth-Split Option. These are scoped product examples, not rights across all policies. [W4]

Ask for the applicable option wording, permitted timing, minimum retained values, conversion or allocation basis, charges and updated benefit illustrations for every resulting policy. Also ask how loans, assignments, beneficiaries and future premiums are handled. The current page does not establish your split eligibility or resulting values; only the insurer can confirm the request. See the servicing guide.

How do change of insured, beneficiaries and trusts differ?

Changing the insured person changes whose life the contract covers. Entrust publishes a change-of-life-assured feature; it does not establish unrestricted changes for your contract. Ask about new-person eligibility, consent, underwriting, benefit changes and approval before relying on the option. [W4]

A beneficiary receives a benefit when the contract conditions are met; changing that recipient is different from changing the insured or owner. A trust introduces separate legal arrangements, not a label automatically created by a beneficiary nomination. Read ownership and assignment, the glossary and change procedures. Ask a qualified legal adviser about the actual trust deed, trustee powers and relevant jurisdictions; this site creates no trust. [W2]

Where do I go next?

Use country guides, life stages, trust checks and fulfillment-ratio context. Ask about a contract feature with insurer, edition and operation only. Acceptance depends on the insurer. This site refers enquiries to a licensed Hong Kong broker for regulated assessment. Mainland visitors must complete the sales process and sign in Hong Kong. [W5]

What do readers ask about policy mechanics?

Are illustrated bonuses guaranteed?

No. Separate guaranteed values from the illustrated non-guaranteed benefits. [W1]

Does cooling-off start when I sign?

The described life-policy trigger is delivery of the policy or notice, whichever is earlier. [W2]

Is policy borrowing interest-free?

Do not assume so. Obtain the applicable loan interest and repayment conditions. [W3]

Can paying in AUD change an HKD contract to AUD?

Payment currency alone does not establish a contract-currency change; use the insurer’s separate procedure.

Does every policy allow splitting?

No general entitlement is established. Check the exact option and resulting values for your contract.

Does changing the beneficiary change the insured person?

These concern different roles. Confirm and submit the correct insurer operation.

Is a beneficiary nomination a complete trust arrangement?

Do not assume so. Obtain legal review of any intended trust and the insurer’s required records.
